The sound of small waves gently bumping against the rocks was likely the most noticeable that morning, even from so far away. The sky was a typical morning mix of blues and reds, meshing into purple wherever the colors met. Thin, cotton-like clouds dappled the heavens above, appearing to weave out like cobwebs in the crisp ocean breeze. Klein loved mornings like this, especially after a long night. The young man was in a hangar, laying on a low-profile mechanic’s creeper, working on changing the oil in one of the base’s Humvees. It wasn’t his job or anything, it was just something he enjoyed doing from time to time - it was a great stress reliever, why exactly he wasn’t sure.
Socket wrench in hand, the young man cranked at the vehicles oil drain plug, dragging a pan from nearby and placing it underneath it before removing the plug itself. Sliding out from underneath the Humvee, Klein sat up and pulled a terry cloth rag from his pocket and went to work removing the dirt and grime from his hands. His pale face had black smudges all over it, even his usually tousled brown hair had succumbed to the work, taking on a dirty appearance that was unbecoming of him. Stepping out of the hangar, Klein took in a deep breath and closed his eyes, tilting his head back towards the sky.
The breeze was great, chilling him lightly as a result of him being a little warm from being under the truck.
A reluctant smile forced its way across his face as he slowly opened his eyes, letting out an exasperated sigh as he started hearing the sounds of soldiers flooding towards the cafeteria for breakfast. He thought about eating, despite really not wanting to. Thinking back on that briefly, Klein tried to recount the last time he had actually eaten anything. A few days, was his guess, though he couldn’t be sure. He was exhausted, tired of pretty much everything and anything. Despite all his training, the attack on Earth had proven to Klein that he was not ready for war, and he possibly never would. Rag in hand, Klein folded it to a clean side and wiped off his face, heading towards the direction of the cafeteria.
