Personality & Character
Klein is a young man of a kind and gentle demeanor. The kind hearted UFE pilot tends to try and see the good in everyone, so much so that it at times can be seen as a fault. To Klein, everyone deserves a change. It is his maturity of mind that allowed him to progress through the ranks of the United Earth Forces no real trouble at all, showing himself capable of overall good judgment. This trait however is not without its drawbacks, as Klein is someone who could easily be manipulated by someone playing off of his emotions.
This kindness should not be seen as a weakness though, as Klein has grown to be quite discerning of the ugliness and brutality prevalent in the world today. Despite being a soldier and pilot, it is not that he has chosen to dive into the harmful and dangerous path set before him, but rather to rise above it and at least try to fight for a peace that all humanity can coexist in. In his relatively short life, Klein has been tempted by negativity, but has not embraced it. He has felt anger, even true rage, yet has not acted on it. And that is one of Klein's greatest strengths.
Another great quality Klein possesses is his generosity towards others. Having lived both sides of the social scale, Klein is able to both sympathize and empathize with almost everyone around him. He is quick to give aid to those in need, and does so expecting nothing in return. Furthermore, the nature of Klein’s generosity is quite intimate, in that it is a very private and not something he brags about publicly. If he helps someone or gives them something, it is something that remains between them and never leaves the safety of the conversation. Almost like a secret, he would suppose. It’s something that he does both for his and their privacy, but is also somewhat of an ego booster for him.
What really led to Klein's rise to prominence is his ability to remain level headed at all times. Early training drills showed he had an exceptional knack for responding calmly and rationally to every combat situation he was thrown in to, rather than letting emotions take control. Because of this, Klein is well respected as both a leader and teammate among the ranks of the United Earth Forces. He is always of sound mind and body, and has been described has being "sane when the current situation presents the most insane of circumstances".
Despite his love for piloting and desire to do whatever it takes to protect his home, Klein finds an inner conflict with the exact nature of war. Death is always a fact, and the possibility that he might have to end the life of another human being is a very real and troubling thing for him. Because of his, Klein works effortlessly to develop battle strategies to disable his opponents rather than outright killing them. It his his unwillingness to kill another being that is his biggest crutch. Of all the times the young man has been disabled in simulations or shot down in actual combat, it has always been because of freezing out of reluctance to end the life of another soul.
Deep down, Klein holds a deep hatred for the Vers Orbital Knights. This hatred has led Klein into a spiraling darkness as he continues to grow obsessed with bringing the Knights to their eventual ruin. It is a promise, one he's made to family and friends, and more importantly - the one he loved. Whether or not Klein truly has the capacity to kill one of the Orbital Knights has been the subject of scrutiny, with most pointing out his gentle nature and desire not to kill. These objections are usually rebuked with Klein commenting on the soulless nature of the Knights, instead clinging to their need to face justice for all the lives they've brought to ruin. When entering this dark mindset, Klein becomes a shadow of his former self. The events of Operation Earthfall have also led Klein to experience horrific nightmares, and thus poor sleeping habits, which sometime require medication to remedy.

Skills
A college student, Klein has taken an specific interest in Psychology, choosing to follow in his father’s footsteps. Klein is a great listener, and is excellent in reading the body language of others. As a result, Klein is naturally empathetic to almost everyone and is naturally inquisitive. He takes a particular interest in being able to analyze vague statements made by others in order to find the actual meaning to what they say. He is incredibly grounded with himself, tolerant of others and takes great joy in solving complex problems - particularly in the form of riddles.
Something that Klein enjoys doing and sharing with others is his love for various Arts - particularly sketching in his journal during his free time. People, places, things - you name it, Klein Choshek can draw it. His attention to detail is acute, bringing every little thing he draws to life - not literally, of course. Many of the people that know Klein often recount his habit for sitting around before and after class on the school grounds, drawing all sorts of things that pass by. Of course, every artist has their favorite thing to draw, Klein takes particular favor in drawing people. He has a habit of getting himself into trouble in class when he spaces out during lectures, instead taking to awkward and embarrassing daydreams as he draws pictures of his love interest (and closest friend).
One of Klein's most praised skills, as well as the one he takes to in wooing the object of his affection, is his knack for cooking & baking. Alongside Psychology, Mr. Choshek has taken a keen interest in the culinary arts. Nothing is out of the question to him, taking to everything from English to Italian and American to Japanese. Whatever the interests of the people he's cooking for, really. The sweets that Klein makes are particularly well received, with Klein frequently baking a variety of things for local bake sales. Of all the things he makes, Klein takes great pride in his pastas as well as brownies and fudge balls.
Drawing more into his military skills, Klein is regarded for his ability to lead. Yes, leadership is a skill of Klein's that puts him a little ways ahead than his peers. He is quick in thinking and possesses an overwhelming knack for devising intricate strategies before a fight. His ability to adapt various tactics, paired with his leader-like personality, makes Klein a strong and capable leader. Charismatic and strong willed, there are few who look to Klein and don't feel the constant tug for their morale to be boosted. His calmness in battle in conjunction with his prowess in the field of Psychology makes the young man the perfect person to turn to when the time is dire.
Klein, as a result of his frequent and ongoing training (as well as his status as a UFE solider), has developed himself as a more than capable Kataphrakt pilot. Of course, the modest Klein is always quick to point out that he's nothing special - and he would be right. During initial training exercises, Klein performed below average. Despite this, he kept pushing and pushing, eventually coming to be to par with some of the upper class students from his school. Since moving from the United States to go to basic training and college in Shinawara, Klein has focused more on his piloting - especially after enlisting in the UFE. Slowly but surely, Klein's natural ability for developing intricate strategy is making him a prominent up-and-coming figure among same-age peers.
History
Family Background Klein is the son of Marcus Ian Choshek, a well received military psychologist for the United Forces of Earth, and Laura Anne Choshek (née Shepard), who also served the UFE as a tank crew commander (a path Klein’s older sister would follow). Because of this, the family never remained in more than one place for very long. It was a life that Klein enjoyed, though. Marcus Ian Choshek would later be killed during the Heaven’s Fall Incident while being stationed on a UFE ship that was struck by a Moon meteor. Grief stricken, Laura Choshek grew ill and nearly maddened. Retiring from military service, the mother Choshek eventually cleaned up and currently serves as a model example of a mother dedicated to her children.
June 6, 1995 - Klein is Born
Born on the hot summer day of June 6, 1995, Klein wasn't necessarily a normal child by any strict means. He was very quiet, almost perpetually shy. There were times that his mother, Laura, thought the baby boy was sick and in need of medical help. However, frequent hospital visits paired with testing would prove that there was nothing wrong with Klein, and that the family had absolutely nothing to worry about. This, of course, didn't keep Laura Choshek from worrying. Many late nights with the newborn Klein would follow, with every passing night driving more and more stress into both his mother and father. Eventually, the family took to hiring a nanny to look over both Klein and his three year old sister.
Time with said nanny was...interesting, to say the least. She was an elderly woman, akin to the Mrs. Doubtfire type as portrayed in the Robin Williams film of the same name. She was an excellent helped, cleaning the entire house and cooking for the family. In fact, Klein had developed a nasty habit of biting and screaming, especially when being put to bed. The nanny - who's name was later recounted as Mrs. Hanson - was able to break that habit almost as immediately as it had began. Through Mrs. Hanson, the baby Klein and his elder sister grew to develop many of the strong personality traits they have today. Of course, having been only a baby at this time, only so much was able to sink in to the boy. What was able to stick, however, played an integral part in making Klein the young man he is today.
Childhood & The First Earth-Mars War
The Heaven’s Fall Incident would forever change Klein’s life, despite being so young at the time. Only four years old, the little boy was at home with his mother in the family’s temporary Oklahoma home. His father, Marcus, had been sent off on a naval ship that a the time was just off the coast of Australia. It had been about a month since he had seen his dad, and news that he would return soon had the entire family in high spirits. When the Incident itself finally occurred, the family was thrown into a fit of panic. Still, the hope that Marcus Chosek would return home to them was strong. However, after the chaos of the horrific event had subsided for the most part, the family received terrible news - the aircraft carrier Marcus Choshek had been stationed on was struck by one of the meteors from the Moon, with last-minute transmission being the only form of confirmation.
Laura Choshek entered a dark period in her life, which rippled throughout the family life and left Klein's eldest sister to take up most of the household duties despite being only seven years old. Klein would begin to develop a strong and apparent respect for his sister, which would grow throughout their childhood and strengthen to the present day. The four year old boy, despite his age, would eventually begin helping around wherever he was able. This, of course, was limited to a few light household chores - such as sweeping the floor and brushing the family dog.
Aftermath of the First War
In the aftermath of the First War, the Choshek Family found themselves at a loss. So much destruction had come out of the event, leaving the family as nothing more than fragments of their former selves. Of course, there was the silver lining - they were all still together. Over time, things began to turn around. Laura was eventually able to pull herself out of her rut, which allowed the family to pull through the crippling loss of Marcus. She would eventually retire from the UFE, choosing to remain at home to raise her children with help from her sister, Julia, as well as Mrs. Hanson.
School was something Klein took very well to. The change was something he needed, having been through a lot despite his age. Of course, he wasn’t a special case by any means. He had his ups and downs, classes he did well in and some he didn’t. He even found himself in a little trouble from time to time, though that was more during the middle school years. Klein’s sister, well near ending her time in high school, had set in motion plans to enter the United Earth Army’s Mustang Platoon as a tank crew member, hoping to follow in their mother’s footsteps. The indecisive Klein didn’t know what he wanted to do with his life at this point, instead choosing to leave everything up to fate.
High School - Klein & the KG-6 Sleipnir
High school started off relatively normal for Klein. He went to class, made a few friends, rinse and repeat for most of the year. However, the day came when a recruiter for the United Earth Forces visited the school. The presentation was extraordinarily well done, detailing the various benefits of joining the military. What Klein considered the real pull, however, was that this particular recruiter didn’t sugarcoat anything. The dangers and cons of joining the army were laid flat out in the table, no one was in the dark. So, Klein made the decision he felt would benefit himself and his family best. Just like his sister, Klein was going to join the United Earth Army, only he would pursue a career as a Kataphrakt pilot.
That chance finally came in his Junior year, at age sixteen. Kataphrakt pilot training was a normality among the curriculum, but Klein made sure it was one of the first courses he signed up for. This way, he could get a little head start from some of his peers - or so he thought. A near mandatory course, Klein should have expected to see most of the Junior class there. For whatever reason, this wasn’t his initial expectation. Still, he welcomed the opportunity to compete against his class - to make friends, and to grow in his ability as a pilot. It was going to be a long two years for sure, he could tell. Klein looked forward to it though.
The KG-6 Sleipnir was a marvelous machine, one Klein loved working with throughout his time as a trainee. A little cocky, the sixteen year old had a habit of getting in over his head and because of that, his grades in the class suffered. Maybe he just wasn’t cut out for piloting? What else, he didn’t know. For a while, Klein had contemplated whether he should drop out of the course or not, only to be talked out of the thought by a girl in the class - Piper. Following this initial interaction, the two became good friends, spending several after-class hours together to train for the class itself. Klein grew more confident, and his skill as a pilot improved.
When the end of Senior year finally came around, Klein had changed dramatically. He grew level headed, careful. His piloting was now slightly above par, but nothing miraculous. Immediately following graduation, Klein made his intent on going to basic military training known to the rest of his family. They were supportive, thrilled in fact. [UNNAMED SISTER] made several cracks about getting to boss her baby brother around, but reassured him that everything was going to be just swell. She was going to have his back, so he wasn’t worried at all. The rest from there was, as they say, history. Shortly after graduation, Klein was put in touch with the recruiting officer, and was on his way to Shinawara, Japan.
The United Earth Army - Basic Training
Klein’s first week of BT was...strange, to say the least. The bus he was on arrived at the Tanegashima base in the middle of a very dark, moderately stormy night. It almost seemed like the perfect horror flick setup. Vivid, fluorescent floodlights lit up the area as several new recruits piled out of the other buses. Klein had a fit of panic, fearing slightly that he - as he had so many times before - gotten in over his head. The first night of his first day was spent in an under-prepared bunk room, full of uncomfortable hand-me-down cots and smelling of odors Klein couldn’t begin to describe. He and his bunk mates dealt with it, expecting such from the recruiter’s words. Instead choosing to look ahead to the rest of training.
There were many interesting characters at Tanegashima, a few of which would eventually become Klein’s teammates after completing training. One such person was Ian Burk, whom Klein met while standing in line for breakfast the next morning. Another interesting figure, who later introduced himself as Martin Qualls, spent his time floating around spreading conspiracy theories to the masses. Later that day it was the basics: the men were given their uniforms, mandatory inoculations and given their first fitness test. Some of the recruits performed quite poorly, with Klein himself struggling at first. He had, however, developed a “no pain, no gain” mentality - so he stuck it out like the solider he was hellbent on becoming.
Towards the end of week two, Klein suddenly began to feel as if he had made a giant mistake. He had, at one point, even feared being kicked out of the training program. One day after what he could only describe as training hell, Klein was sitting near his squad’s wall lockers, where he pulled off his boots in preparation for a well deserved night’s sleep. Everyone wore the same thing, so everyone kind of expected their feet to be in horrible shape. Klein, though? Not so much. Skin rubbed raw, horrendous blisters - Klein panicked. Ian expressed concerns for Klein’s health, wanting to report the conditions to the facility’s superiors. Choshek talked him out of this immediately, expressing concerns that he couldn’t be melded into a soldier if he were to give up so easily.
The next few weeks of training didn’t bring much in the way of excitement. There were a few hidden gems Klein would recall later on, such as weight training with combat equipment. Holding heavy packs of necessities for the field, Klein’s squad was observed by several Drill Sergeants who critically scanned their every move - every little move. Bodies shaking, the squad was pushed beyond their limitations. It had far surpassed any sensation Klein could ever imagine. When talking about this memory, Klein always recalls how the exercise ended - shallow, labored breathing and blurred vision that would have to make one legally blind.
In all honesty, and he should have expected it, but sleep quickly grew to become one of Klein’s main concerns. There were several sleepless nights, and the nights when he was able to get some sleep the hours were so scarce they almost didn’t help. Eventually, he grew to choose sleeping over his meals, literally sleeping on his tray in the mess hall. There were even times, he recounts, when he would think sneaking off from marching formations in order to catch a quick nap, only to remain out of fairness for his squad. They had to stick together and push through. That was when Klein’s leadership began to show, catching the eyes of the various Drill Sergeants.
He was halfway through. He was going to make it, he had to. The fragile and meek Klein had developed into a hardened young man, dedicating himself to keeping his squad-mates in good spirits and in peak performance. Klein would later be put in the Squad Leader position, allowing him a chance to let his leadership abilities truly shine. An incident with Martin is one Klein’s friends tend to bring up most, where the former began struggling halfway through a ten-mile hike. Klein aided Martin for the rest of the hike, taking both his equipment back and helping him for the remainder of the exercise. Martin would be hospitalized with a broken ankle and a severe case of gangrene.
Probably Klein’s most memorable experiences during training was when Ian entered a fit of insanity. The squad for this exercise were to dig a series of fox-holes and take turns scanning the surroundings in a mock guard duty exercise. The entire squad took turns rotating shifts so the others could rest, with Klein’s shift coming up some time around 1AM. Relatively quiet at first, and very dark, Choshek scanned the distant surroundings for the Drill Sergeants out and about to catch anyone that drifted off during the exercise. Out of nowhere, Ian appeared in a sleepy daze, striking Klein with the shovel. The uneven surface caused Ian to fall, waking and shocked at what had happened. Klein was alright, and suffered only from a minor headache and a small bump on his head. The event went unreported.
Graduation day finally came, signifying the end of the grueling ten week training program. Klein was ecstatic, finally able to follow in his father’s footsteps and be a soldier. A slight degree of cockiness propelled him forward as he made a solemn oath to make his father proud and do something great. The event itself was great, but overall seemed like it was pretty short. Apart from his mother and sister showing, there was nothing particularly worth noting of that day. Not too long after, Klein was given his first assignment, which would take him to Tokyo, Japan. Tuition to one of the colleges was offered to him by the UEA, with Klein graciously accepting in order to pursue a a degree in the field of Psychology, just as his father had.
The Move to Toyko, Japan - College
Arrival to Tokyo was a culture shock to Klein. Even in the aftermath of Heaven’s Fall, the metropolis seemed to be flourishing. The young man took to the city very well, even writing to his mother that it “literally has to be the best place on earth”. Within his first couple of months he had started his tutelage at the University of Tokyo, seen the Emperor and his family at the Imperial Palace, participated in war movie-esque scenes of crossing the street and more. Noodle stands, sushi shops and frequenting cat cafes became the norm for Klein as he assimilated into a lifestyle brought on by peer pressure of his new native friends. He didn’t mind. Instead, Klein welcomed the change and embraced it.
College itself was fun, too. Klein made a great deal of friends, got along well with all his teachers. It was just a good experience all around. In an effort to keep his training up to date and well polished, Klein took to taking an Advanced Piloting Program offered by the United Nations of Earth through the University, instructed by one Sergeant Evey Hunter. As with his old training course, Klein started off slow at first. Over time, he improved, eventually growing to be one of the courses best pilots (with many pilots scoring better marks than him, of course). Everything looked like it was going to go off without a hitch. He’d go to class, go to training, then head to work in Tokyo’s Shinjuku red-light district at a small club. There were no distractions, but that was about to change.
Klein & Piper Reunite
One night, while working, Klein was introduced to a young woman through a mutual friend. It was a quizzical moment, given that he had met many students from the University. Of course, he brushed this off as simply maybe she was not a student. Still, she looked familiar, somehow. He couldn’t quite place his finger on it. He decided not to dwell on these random specifics, and instead took to the idea of making a new friend. She was beautiful, funny and very easy to talk to - almost the antipode of the awkward demeanor Klein had a tendency to put off. Still, the two of them got along very well, finding commonalities in all sorts of things. Had Klein not known any better at that point in time, he’d swear to anyone he knew that he was in love.
It wasn’t until the second day they interacted that Klein realized who she was. Piper Quinn, the girl he had been in the mandatory piloting class with. It was nice to know that she was someone he knew, but he felt like a complete jerk for not recognizing her sooner. Of course, she knew who he was right away, noting that he hadn’t changed much since high school - pointing out his fragile features remaining strikingly similar to his junior-year self. Klein took each and every opportunity he could to spend time with Piper, be them alone or with friends. All he wanted was to be close to her, and it appeared to be a shared desire. Klein learned she had entered the United Earth Air Force, stationed nearby, where she was an F-22 pilot. She had always thought about piloting Kataphrakts, but felt it wasn’t her place. Klein, however, she complimented for his resolve. It was probably the first compliment he had received for the decision.
After about a month of hanging out and stupidly obvious flirting, the two began dating. Klein’s grades suffered slightly as his attention turned from his studies to her, drawing negative connotations from his family and friends. The relationship blossomed, and the two were attached at the hip any time they were together. It was picture perfect to Klein, which he today admittedly recounts as being incredibly naive. Nothing ever ends on a picture perfect note, does it? Unlike the fairy tale nature so many were accustomed to, the events of real life had another plan for Klein. What exactly that was, he didn’t know until months later.
Operation Earthfall - When Everything Changed
Klein’s claim to fame, so to speak, came during his Advanced Piloting Courses. While pushing the envelope with the KG-6 Sleipnir, Klein knew that the UFE Kataphrakt didn’t have enough to contend with possible opposition. When the KG-7 Aerion finally rolled off the production lines, Klein’s class was among the first to get the new machine, in an effort to prepare them sooner. Klein loved the Aerion, and it quickly became his preferred machine over the Sleipnir. Of course, there were things about it that he disliked too, but these were usually remedied by features that balanced them out. He continued to push himself further and further, contending with the top of his class, eventually placing among the top five.
When the Princess of Vers, Asseylum Vers Allusia, visited the nearby city of Shinawara, Klein was working at the base doing volunteer janitorial work in exchange for a short run in one of the fully equipped KG-7s. He had to experience these things at their fullest potential, not the dumbed down ones at the training session. How would he be prepared if he wasn’t given a chance to use the real thing? The day went by relatively smooth, for the most part. However, the time came when Klein noticed something streaking towards the horizon and into the city. At first, he had no idea what the object was, but as he watched the trail left by, he was overcome with horror. An explosion confirmed his suspicions - it was a missile.
The city became chaotic, people ran around in a fit of insane panic as they tried to grasp what had happened. Piper arrived at the base in tears, informing Klein that the Princess of Vers had been killed by the missile attack. He was utterly speechless, trying to find words to both help explain what had happened and also console Piper. Alarms sounded that night as another horrific event was about to transpire - the Orbital Knights’ Operation Earthfall. Like meteors, the Vers Landing Castles descended from the sky. This is what Klein had been trained for, what his friends had trained for - what Piper had been trained for. Everyone was called to their stations immediately, with Klein and Piper sharing their first kiss before being parted in the chaos.
This was madness. One of the Castles landed nearby, completely obliterating everything within the impact zone. Klein and his team were immediately confronted by one of the Martian Kataphrakt (the Ortygia), as well as various supporting forces. The UFE put up their all against the Vers attackers, but were utterly destroyed by their overwhelming power. With little to no Kataphrakt support remaining, the UFE called in the backup air support. Klein hated the idea of Piper needing to fight, he didn’t feel like the F-22s could properly stand against the Orbital Knights. He was wrong, though. While the F-22s weren’t performing well against the Landing Castle itself, they performed more than sufficiently against the ground forces - a result of their numbers.
The Martian Kataphrakt’s actions that followed would haunt Klein forever. Seizing a weapon from a fallen KG-7, the Vers machine began to multiply itself, using its new overwhelming numbers against the UFE. One after one after one, the Raptors were picked out of the sky. Then, the one shot. Klein watched in horror as Piper’s fighter was struck by the bullets of the enemy, bursting into flames before crashing below. Klein entered a blind frenzy, charging the Kataphrakt Clones, but his attempts were in vain. He was overwhelmed and his Aerion was gunned down, hardly surviving the attack. The last thing he remembered was looking in the Aerion’s camera feed was the burning wreckage of Piper’s F-22.
When he finally came to, the Martian forces had dispersed, moving to another location of the city. Klein’s first thought was Piper. Jumping out of the KG-7, Klein made a mad dash for the wreckage. He knew he was too late, he didn’t know what he expected to find there, but he knew what he was going to be faced with. As one would expect from the victim of an explosion and fire, she was unrecognizable. Shaking and in teats, Klein pulled Piper’s remains from the wreckage and held her body until the recovery team arrived. It would be the last time Klein ever saw her again, and her funeral the last time he could bear to look at her picture. It was all Vers's fault she was gone. The Orbital Knights became heartless, soulless monsters in Klein's eyes - and he swore on Piper's grave that he would see every last one of them wiped away.
Aftermath of Operation Earthfall & Present Day
Following the horrific Operation Earthfall, Klein slipped into a dark mindset. He became closed off, scared. He blamed himself for Piper’s death, for the deaths of all the people that perished in Tokyo that day. Hell, he even blamed himself for the Princess of Vers being killed. Had he realized what was coming beforehand, he could have told someone and it could have been prevented. Sleepless nights followed, with Klein developing a sleeping disorder requiring powerful sleep aids in order for him to get even a few hours of sleep. Of course, the efficiency of these vary. Sometimes they work, and he sleeps almost a full night. However, more often than not, he sleeps for two to three hours at a time before waking in a fight of tremors and cold sweats.
Looking forward, Klein prepares for his next military assignment to one of the United Earth Force’s many platoons. His promise is his drive, his target - every single Orbital Knight that dropped down on Earth only days ago, with the dark Kataphrakt from Tokyo holding a special place of resentment in hist heart.
