Personality & Character
Daniel, described in a few short words, is a misanthropic, sarcastic, asshole. It’s a surprise that Daniel ever managed to even join the military, what with it being an organization where people are expected and in fact must work together on a daily basis, but he’s somehow wormed his way through the cracks. In combination with his heritage, it’s even more of a shock.
While Daniel could probably be considered a loner, he wasn’t the most conventional kind. He’s not afraid or even against interacting physically with anyone, but he keeps everyone at an emotional distance, brushing off any personal inquiries with sarcastic remarks until whoever it is that is asking gets annoyed and goes away. In fact, sarcasm is Daniel’s response to most things, and it can be very hard to get under his skin, and he takes self-reliance to an extreme. It’s safe to say that Daniel doesn’t have very many friends.
There is very little about Daniel that could be considered ‘overt’, and, surprising to most people who know him, he is more than just kind of a dick. Despite the fact that his heritage doesn’t bother him anymore, it doesn’t mean that it didn’t bother him before, and all the discrimination he suffered as a child has left him with a little bit of an inferiority complex. Daniel compensates for this by having a bit of a competitive side. It’s not like Daniel so rub it in (too much anyways), should he win, often simply enjoying his victory with a smug and self-assured looking smirk, something that occasionally pisses people off more than if he’d just boasted about it, and he takes losses in a similar fashion, shifting into a rather disgruntled mood. It can be quite easy to bait him into any number of competitions, once you get to know him.
Despite Daniel’s efforts to keep people away, no man is an island. Every now and then Daniel finds himself longing for human contact that doesn’t end in some leaving in a huff of annoyance, despite the fact that he’d never admit it. He occasionally reaches out to people, sometimes out of sympathy even, having had his own fair share of hardships in the past, but he’s never willing to admit he’d do something out of the goodness of his heart, instead simply veiling it in, you guessed, sarcastic remarks that turn any form of thanks into a shouting match. Still, those who learn to call Daniel a friend find him to be an extremely loyal one, despite his grumblings.
Skills
Born and raised in relative poverty, Daniel has learned to do the most he can with the hand he’s given. He’s been in a fair number of fights, and as a result has gotten surprisingly good at it, and in combination with his military training, it leaves him a rather formidable opponent. While he is by no means a martial arts master, he’s more than capable of holding his own in a brawl, and he’s not a bad shot either, a skill that he’s constantly improving on with his ad-hoc competitions at the shooting range.
Piloting is something he still suffers on. He’s still new to the whole piloting thing and hasn’t quite gotten down the exact movements required of him to move his kataphract move with grace rather than the heavy stomping movements he’s capable of doing now. Still, he has a good mastery of the basics, and that’s all that is really needed for him to improve upon it. Assuming he lives long enough anyways.
Outside of combat, Daniel is rather skilled at urban exploration, something he did quite often as a child, and has an almost prenatural sense when maneuvering around cities, something that seems to apply to his kataphract as well, as Daniel quite often uses buildings to his advantage, breaking line of sight from the enemy while keeping a mental reference of where are and where they’re moving. He’s also rather self-reliant, and often unwilling to accept help, meaning he’s had to learn a few personal skills along the way, and anything he didn’t learn during his childhood, military training was sure to teach him instead. As such, he can cook, clean, do laundry, and all other sorts of household tasks, and he finds himself particularly skilled at card games, especially the ones that can be played alone, such as Solitaire or building a house of cards.
History
The son of a Vers soldier left on Earth after Heaven’s Fall and a Terran mother, Daniel has faced no small amount of racism as a child, from both sides even, almost getting even worse treatment than a pureblooded Vers for his mixed heritage. It was no surprise that Daniel’s family would not be very well liked, considering the war, and it was a safe assumption to make that Daniel lived a life of poverty. His parents were barely scraping by, having little to no support from any of their own families, and struggled to find work. Eventually, Daniel’s father would be hospitalized for cancer, likely caused by simple bad health, genetics, and stress. It would be a bill that his family could not pay, and so his father would pass away, not all that peacefully.
With his father dead, all that left Daniel with was his mother, someone who had begun to resent him for the horrid treatment that they had been facing, though she would never admit it. It was simply a struggle, one that Daniel couldn’t take for much longer. As soon as he was of age, he signed up to join the United Earth military, simply cutting ties with everyone he’d known back home and leaving it all behind. He doesn’t know what happened to his mother, and quite honestly he doesn’t care all that much. She seemed happy that he was leaving anyways, and was probably better off without him.
